Effect of welding and subsequent treatments on pitting liability of stainless steel
The dependence of pitting corrosion liability on welding procedures and on subsequent surface treatments for one austenitic and one duplex stainless steel was investigated. After exposure to FeCl3 - solution image analysis of pitted surfaces was performed and mass losses were determined. The pitting has always specific topography regarding the welds. By variance analysis of mass losses it was established that chemical or mechanical surface treatments affect pitting corrosion of both steels much stronger than the type of welding procedure. The austenitic steel is generally more liable to pitting than the duplex steel. By acid pickling or mechanical polishing that liability is considerably decreased.
