The Artists and their Clientele int he Late Medieval Damatian Commune of Rab
In the city of Rab in the late Middle Ages existed a wide circle of clientele consisting of members of ecclesiastical hierarchy, local patrician families but also of groups of poorer citizens grouped around professional and religious confraternities whose financial capabilities enabled them to hire famous and less famous artisans and artists from Rab but also from other regions such as Dalmatia, Istria, and Italy. They were hired for the constructions, reconstructions, and renovation of buildings such as communal churches, monasteries, patrician palaces and confraternity houses but also for construction and sculpturing of private monuments which all made Rab an attractive place with distinguished Gothic and Renaissance view.
