Slavic Vigour and Italian Elegance: Dalmatia in 19th century British travelogue(s)
In the 19th century English are the most frequent guests on the both sides of the Adriatic. When coming to the eastern shores they are confronted by the multicultural reality of Dalmatia. The English traveller at moments sees the Italian as the intelligent, bourgeois citizen who is becoming substituted by the Slavs, their language and culture. The traveller's attitude is ambivalent, he is amazed at the complexity of Dalmatia and its Slav inhabitants but at the same time he is preoccupied for the future of Italian minority. The Slav component is viewed through the western European perspective and in its relation to Italian/Venetian.
