Symbol, Identity and Tradition: Coat of Arm of the Republic of Croatia The coat of arm of the Republic of Croatia with its square red and white fields is one of the most recognizable symbols of today modern Croatia. The modern coat of arm of the Republic of Croatia is actually composed of the several historical coats of arms of the historical Croatian countries: Slavonia, Dalmatia, Istria, Croatia and the coat of arm of the Republic of Dubrovnik. In this paper author discuss the development and usage of these coats of arms in history. The description and heraldic analysis of each of these coats of arms is also given. There are also several examples of the usage of these coats of arms as well as the illustrations of the historical usage. Most of these coats of arms are dated in middle ages and were rather important as the symbols of identity of Croats throw the history. All from the beginning of settlement of Croats in the regions where they today live, and especially in 13th and 14th century, their land had been divided in three independent, but well connected kingdoms: Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia. It has to underline that in spite of the fact that during the history Croatian kingdoms were part of medieval Kingdom of Hungary and later were parts of Habsburg Monarchy, Croatian states always had certain level of autonomy all throw the history.
