Croatian Migrations in the Italian Coastal Area in the Late Middle Ages and at the Beginning of the Early Modern Age
Croatian trans-Adriatic migrations are part of a complex and long-lasting process, which must necessarily be seen within the context of political, military, social and economic circumstances in the wider area of Southeastern Europe. In the time of the Ottoman incursion and conquests, particularly during the period from the second half of the fifteenth to the end of the sixteenth century, there were mass migration processes directed from the Croatian political and ethnic area towards the western coast of the Adriatic. In the article, the central areas of Croatian immigration on the Italian coast (Friuli, Puglia, Molise, the March of Ancona, Veneto and the city of Venice), the regional origin of immigrating Croats, and their process of adaptation and integration into their new habitats will be discussed.
