History of the Ottoman Documents in the State Archives of Dubrovnik (Ragusa)
The Ottoman documents given to the Ragusans from the middle of the 15th century to the beginning of the 19th century were kept and preserved in the so-called Turkish chancellary. The chancellary was situated in the Rector’s palace of the Republic of Dubrovnik together with all other state chancellaries. The state officials in charge of the Turkish chancellary were trained interpreters for the Ottoman language, the so-called dragomans. Since they had a crucial role in preserving, classifying and translating of the Ottoman documents, the author of this paper intend to dwell upon their training and professional life as well as upon the destiny of the Turkish chancellary together with the Ottoman documents.
