Quality of life in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis underwent neurological care at Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek, Croatia
The study was undertaken to determine differences in quality of life (QoL) among patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) considering age of patients, using or non-using disease-modifying medications (DMM) and number of relapses in last year. The aim of the study was to determine how different outer and inner factors influence on QoL in patients with RRMS. Seventy patients (age 47.4±10.1) all with diagnosed RRMS (35 using DMM and 35 non-using DMM) were included in the study. Several indicators of QoL were estimated with modified fatigue impact scale (MFIS) and generic SF-36v2 questionnaire. Fatigue as important factor of QoL has negative influence on physical (p<0.001, ANOVA), cognitive (p=0.043, ANOVA) and psychosocial (p=0.011, ANOVA) functioning of patients. The influence of fatigue is lower (p=0.041, Student's t-test) in patients when using DMM and in younger patients. QoL is generally lower, mostly in fields of physical functioning. Higher number of relapses last year has negatively influenced on vitality (p=0.002, Spearman's correlation coefficient (SCC)), social functioning (p=0.031, SCC) and increased influence of fatigue on cognitive functioning (p=0.008, SCC). EDSS disability status scale significantly correlates with influence of fatigue in patients (p<0.001, SCC) and generally with QoL (p<0.001, SCC). Generally, all tested patients with diagnosed RRMS has lower QoL considering the impact of different outer and inner factors, primarily due to physical symptomatology, while psychosocial elements of QoL are not significantly disturbed.
