Modernization Theories and Postsocialist Transformation: The Case of Croatia
The presentation discusses the applicability of the tenets of newer modernization theories (Beck, Giddens, Bauman, Lash, Touraine, Inglehart) in interpreting the postsocialist Croatian society. The thesis, discussed against the empirical evidence gathered by the nationally representative surveys in 1999, 2005, 2015 and 2018, and centered on gender issues, is that a "compressed" modernization - mixing the traits of so-called "first" ("simple", "industrial") and "second" ("reflexive", "post-industrial") - has taken place in Croatia during and following the postsocialist transformation of society. The empirical material discussed concerns values, attitudes, and practices.
