Sprichwörter in kroatischen DaF-Lehrwerken und ihre Bekanntheit unter Jugendlichen

This paper discusses proverbs from the aspect of their usage and their incorporation into courses of German as a foreign language in Croatia. According to Jesenšek (2013: 86), there are two questions that need to be answered in the field of phraseodidactics: (1) the question of selection, i. e. which proverbs are taught in the courses of German as foreign language and (2) the question of presentation, i. e. how proverbs are taught in the course of German as foreign language. The first part of the paper provides therefore an analysis of proverbs that occur in textbooks for German as a foreign language used in high schools in Croatia, whereas the second part the paper focuses on a research among the students of German as a foreign language at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek and their familiarity with the German proverbs that they learned in high school. The textbook analysis is based on Croatian textbooks issued by Školska knjiga, published from 2000 to 2015, which are being used as compulsory teaching material in Croatian schools. The second part of the study was conducted using a questionnaire and the results were statistically analyzed with SPSS for Windows. The research questions in the course of this paper are as follows: How frequently do proverbs appear in German as foreign language textbooks in Croatia? Where do proverbs appear in the textbook (in the text, in exercises, etc.)? Are they didactically prepared and if so, how are they processed? The results of the research showed that proverbs occur in only 11, 97 % of the textbooks analyzed. The students do not possess active knowledge of those proverbs that occur in the textbooks. 76.1 % of them are not familiar with the most frequently occurring German proverbs.
