Child participation in schools - practical and methodological challenges

As educational institutions that play a role in the upbringing of children, schools are an important environment for each child’s growth and development. Children spend a significant portion of their time in school, where they build their social network and grow as individuals through learning, play, and socialising. Thus, school ought to be the key location in which children learn, promote and fulfil their rights. The fulfilment of children’s participatory rights is a core precondition of civic education and the contemporary approach to children, as is also noted in numerous documents issued by the Republic of Croatia and the European Union. This paper presents the results of research conducted in Croatian schools on the topic of pupil participation in school, implemented over the course of two academic years (2015/16 and 2016/17). The study aimed to test the ways in which children understand and experience their own participation in school and to use the findings to offer guidelines on the potential of working with children to increase their participation. Results indicate that there is a need for broader debate on the meaning of the concept of participation and the way in which it is experienced in the context of school and children. It is also notable that the Pupils’ Councils, as a form of mandated child participation in schools, are seen through a critical lens, and are generally not a form of participation that the pupils trust.
