Seafloor digital model as the base for maritime safety, case study St.Ante channel
Hydrographic activity is primarily focused on the safety of sea traffic to avoid loss of human lives, preserve environment and goods and it also underpins all activities related to the sea management and research. It is necessary to establish legal frame for hydrography to achieve uniform quality of data represented on nautical charts on international level. In this paper, a review of laws and standards related to hydrography is made with emphasis on bathymetric survey and practical use. Considering bathymetric survey of ports and navigational routes, multibeam echo sounder systems are capable of complete search of the seafloor in a limited amount of time, which satisfies international standards as well as economic ones. Quality of depth measured with acoustic systems depends on the quality of direct or indirect measurement of the speed of sound in water column. In this paper correlation between change of physical parameters of sea water and change of speed of sound is calculated. Integration and application of modern acoustic and satellite- based methods for bathymetric survey to calculate 3D seafloor model is explained through case study: Bathymetric survey of St. Ante channel. 3D model of seafloor was calculated primarily for maritime safety but it can be useful data source in oceanology, geophysics, tourism and hydrotehnics.
