Sculptures of the Imperial Cult in Salona
At the end of the first century and simultaneously with the pacification of the province of Dalmatia, the imperial cult was established as a basic governmental support, especially in Salona which was to be the capital of the future Roman province. Imperial cult worship can be traced from the Augustan Age when two smaller temples were built at the forum of the original city centre (Urbs vetus) to the tetrarchy period when the Temple of Jupiter was renewed in the new city forum (Urbs orientalis). This can be confirmed not only with the imperial statue but also with other findings, temple and architectural sculpture remains and dedicatory inscriptions. Statue of a naked unknown emperor from the second half of the first century needs to be added to these monuments. This statue is kept in Vienna KHM and it has not been recorded in professional literature. Salona researches have been implemented for more than two centuries. Its monuments are being spread since humanism. Therefore, information on findings location is often missing. Taking the above mentioned into consideration, it is necessary to gather known Salona monuments and their archive data. This would give us a better insight into Salona’s heritage and it would contribute to the knowledge about imperial cult in this ancient city at the east Adriatic coast.
