GMOs in Forestry
The purpose of genetic modification of forest trees is to bring the benefit to forest industry with increasing biomass, energy, and materials production. The important genetically modified traits of forest trees include herbicide resistance, insect resistance, specific environmental tolerances, reproductive sterility, enhanced growth and improved wood properties. The significant research data of genetically modified forest trees are possible to obtained only with the establishment of field trials that last many years due to long trees growth cycle. In Europe, there are field trials of genetically modified poplar, eucalyptus, pine and spruce. In Croatia, field trials of forest trees do not exist. The commercialization of genetically modified forest trees is allowed and implemented in China but it is not allowed in Europe.
