Toward a seamless integration of heritage databases into the portal Written heritage

Croatian mediaeval and early modern manuscripts are written on three scripts – Glagolitic, Latin and Croatian Cyrillic (called bosančica or bosanica) scripts. The most important manuscripts (diplomatic material, registers, fraternity documents, liturgical and literal works, etc.) are written on Glagolitic script. The interdisciplinary scientific project Digitization, bibliographic description and research of texts written on Glagolitic, Croatian Cyrillic and Latin scripts until the end of 19th century in Zadar and Šibenik area (Written heritage), is being carried out at the University of Zadar in co-operation with Vestigia Manuscript Research Centre of University of Graz, Austria and associates. The aim of the project is to improve the use and raise the awareness of the cultural, historical, social and linguistic importance of Zadar written heritage, to empower the possibilities of its research and boost its visibility, provide digital surrogates of manuscripts and early prints from Zadar and Šibenik area, manuscript catalogue and bibliography of texts written on Zadar and Šibenik written heritage, data base of watermarks on papers of manuscripts, lexicon of Zadar and Šibenik written heritage, as well as to provide scholarly platform for research All project results, namely catalogues of manuscripts and early prints and of watermarks, bibliography, lexicon and research infrastructure are to be integrated in a common scientific portal aiming to enable seamless search of objects of and data on Zadar and Šibenik written heritage and their contextualization and as such to act as a scholarly platform enabling and fostering comprehensive research of Zadar and Šibenik written heritage. The first step was the integration of the databases of manuscripts (digital surrogates and metadata) and watermarks (digital surrogates and metadata). Integrated databases enable contextualization of manuscripts and watermarks providing navigation between databases. Therefore, the portal acts as a comprehensive platform for research of Zadar written, providing enriched heritage information, and structured metadata prepared for further interpretation, data mining and visualization. The integration of databases is done within INDIGO information system, which provides infrastructure for building and integrating Thesaurus and sharing authority files between databases (ArhivPRO d.o.o., Koprivnica, Croatia). The poster presents integration of manuscript and watermark databases within the INDIGO system. Not all metadata used for manuscript and watermark description are presented, but those providing connections between databases and seamless navigation through the portal.
