Cesare Fracanzano's The Penitence of St Peter in Dubrovnik and the Iconography of Penitence in Giovanni Bonifaccio's L'arte de' cennti (1616)
The discovery of an unknown painting in Dubrovnik, identified as The Penitence of St Peter - here attributed to Cesare Fracanzano, a painter of Neapolitan Seicento - is analysed with regard to the iconography of penitence. The gestres that reveal remorse and contrition of the penitent sinner are compared to those described in one of the most curious and learned treatises of the time, L'arte de' cenni (Vicenza 1616) by Giovanni Bonifaccio. The article discusses the attribution and the iconography of pain - in particular that of remorse and penitence of St Peter - putting it in the context of the theological statements issued at the Council of Trent and iconographical changes after it.
