EMF-Med: Electromagnetic medicine - a promise for the future

It's been a long way from the prehistorical use of electricity from the nature to this point where we still regard the electromagnetic medicine as a promise for the future. The reason for that is not that so little has been done in that respect, but that there is still so much to do. The ages have passed due to lack of physics and engineering knowledge on electrical phenomena, until the industrial and domestic use of electrical energy became ubiquitous by the beginning of the 20th century. However, it is exactly the high amplitudes of the used electrical quantities that shaped the strong perception of hazard to the human health. Still, many of the first ideas for using artificially produced electrical energy were again for medical purposes. Medical industry indeed developed many procedures and devices relying on the electrical energy and electronics, which are already in use. In parallel, additional knowledge on bioelectromagnetics has been developed, and much of it in fact through the research on harmful effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). COST Action EMF-MED, first designed in 2012, started in 2014, was the world's first systematic initiative to combine the development of novel EMF-based medical applications with the optimization and better understanding of the applications in use, under the umbrella of beneficial innovative uses of EMFs in biomedicine. The past several years show the exponential growth in ideas for innovative cancer and non-cancer interactions and applications with EMFs. This is expected to grow further, especially in the direction of lower amplitudes, still capable of producing a biological effect, but not a harmful one. Even the new terms are coined, such as bioelectronic medicine and electroceuticals. Therefore, this is the right timing for developing a new field ; to complement, and in some cases, conveniently substitute the pharmaceuticals. Looking from the present moment, the future of electromagnetic medicine is certainly much richer than its history.
