Vapor and thermally induced solid-state structural transformations

Reactions or structural transformations in the solid-state are more difficult than in solution because they involve new bond formation or breakage with restricted molecular movements. [1] Synthesis of the mononuclear complex was carried out by using bis(pentane-2, 4- dionato)dioxomolybdenum(VI) and 4- methoxysalicylaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazine. The mononuclear complex was used as a precursor for structural transformations in the solid state (Figure 1). Crystals of [MoO2(L)(MeOH)] were exposed to organic solvent vapors. Also, thermally-induced transformations were investigated. These reactions resulted in the formation of the coordination polymer [MoO2(L)]n. When [MoO2(L)(MeOH)] was exposed to water vapor the coordinated MeOH ligand were replaced with H2O. These transformations occured in a SC-SC manner.[2]
