Identification of Binding Media of a Banner Painted and Gilded on Both Sides
An old fragile banner of Saint Paul and Saint George, made of blue silk fabric and painted and gilded on both sides, was in very deteriorated condition. The objective of treatment was to achieve preservation of a banner. An identification of the binding media was undertaken by TLC methods to facilitate the choice of cleaning methods, conservation and restoration. Method involved vapour phase hydrolisi of unkonown sample and 10 reference materials using 6 M hidrochlkoric acid (1). Hydrolisates of proteins have been separated on microcrisatlline celulose pre-coated layers 20 × 20 cm with several solvent systems. The best separation of amino acids was achieved by means of two dimensional chromatographic separation with chlorophorm - methanol - ammonia 17% (40 : 40 : 20) as the first solvent system and phenol - water as the second. Spots were recorded with CAMAG Video Documentation System. Proteinaceous binders were analysed and identified by the presence of 15 different pure amino acid standards that have been separated with the first solvent system. reference resin samples and unknown sample were extracted in chlorophorm three times fo 15 minuters in the ultrasonic bath, and were spotted on the origin line of silica gel F254s plates using glass micropipettes. Several solvent systems have been examined. The best was benzene. methanol (95:5) with a multiple development technique. The plates were developed and dried for three times. The chromatograms were captured under UV light and those that were sprayed with antimony- thricoride reagent were recorded under white light by means of higly sensitive 3CCD colour video camera (1) M.
