Management of Special Purpose Forests in the Republic of Croatia

There are eight national parks on the territory of the Republic of Croatia: Plitvice Lakes, Risnjak, Mljet, Brijuni, Paklenica, Kornati, Krka and North Velebit. The term "national park" has been defined on the tenth general session of the IUCN assembly, which was held in New Delhi in 1969. National park "is a comparatively big area characterized by exquisite beauty and an area on which one or more ecosystems have not been altered by human utilization and an area on which plant and animal life, geological and morphological characteristics are of special significance for science, education, recreation and tourism." Changes occur in a specific period, i.e. trees and forest grow in natural life conditions. Using the scientific-research approach and by multidisciplinary investigation of growth, increment and development of these forests on permanent experimental plots, one can gain insight into the patterns of natural development, which is a potential aim. Comparison of these findings with the stated condition in management forests leads to information related to human impact upon these forests and nature in general. These information have a significant role in assessing intensity and quantity of anthropogenic influences related to the preservation of natural forest resources, management sustainability, requirements of the society and harmonizing natural potentials with the survival of forests and people. Research and investigation of natural growth and development of special purpose forests in normal and changed ecological conditions provides us with important understanding in the form of scientific results which can be widely applied on the local, national and international level.

Special purpose forests; national parks; multidisciplinary research; growth and development; altered ecological conditions.
