The lecture traced the development of the confessional genre from Saint Augustine to secular autobiographies of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Thomas de Quincey. The major themes addressed were the limits of confessions, the dignity of confessions, the Romantic self as unique and universal at the same time, the questions of sincerity and authenticity etc.
