Ammonium and Nitrate Removal from Water by Ion Exchange Process

The problem of the increasing content of ammonium and nitrate ions in graound water becomes more actual. One of the methods used for ammonium and nitrate removal from water is the ion exchange process. In this study there were examined strong acidc cation exchangers Lewatit S 100 and Amberlite IR 120 for the ammonium removal process and strong basic ion exchanges Amberlite IRA 402, IMAC HP 555 for nitrate removal process. Strong acidic ion exchangers were in H+ form and basic ion exchangers were examined in OH- and chloride active forms. The inflow concentration of ammonium ranged from 105 to 155 mg/L and the inflow amount of nitrate was 245 mg/L, 456 mg/L, 620 mg/L and 910 mg/L. Strong basic ion exchangers in the chloride form proved to be very efficient in the nitrate removal process. Effective exchange capacity of the nitrate was determined till the appearance of the nitrate ion in the outflow at the amount of 50 mg/L. Exchange capacity ranged from 0.62 to 1.05 moles of nitrate per liter of exchanger depending on the nitrate concentration in the inflow and chloride and sulphate content in waste water. In all examined exchangers the exchanger capacity decreased with increase of nitrate concentration in waste water. The ion exchanger was regeneratsd by direct and counter current regeneration process. The qality of the treated waste water after ammonium and nitrate ions removal by ion exchanger process enables repeatedly use of the same water in the technological process.
