Moral responsibility and psychological capacities in the psychopath
The problem of the responsibility of psychopathic offenders involves establishing on the basis of experimental and clinical scientific evidence whether and in which measure they lack certain abilities that are a necessary requirement for moral responsibility. Sub problems: the elaboration of an account of the psychological capacities required for moral responsibility how scientific data can be used to establish impairment in these capacities. Addressing these latter two problems requires considering the methodological problems of relating philosophical analysis to certain existing practices and scientific advancements. In the talk we address the following issues: 1. Constraints on a theory of moral responsibility. 2. Elaborate Fischer and Ravizza’s (1998) account of moral responsibility. 3. Apply it to interface folk-psychology and neuroscientific data – the executive functions account and moral responsibility. 4. We discuss open issues of interactive methodology related to psychopathy, executive functions and reasons- responsiveness.
