Georgius Raguseius against Astrology
Georgius Raguseius (Juraj Dubrovčanin, Dubrovnik, cca. 1550 – Padua, 1622) was an Aristotelian philosopher and physician who stands out as someone who spent an enormous energy, judging on the massiveness of his Epistolae mathematicae seu De divinatione, on refutation of divinatory aspect of astrology. There was an ulterior motive of the destruction of the traditionally dominant role of astrology: by reinterpreting astrology, Raguseius attempted to patch up the seriously damaged ship of Aristotelianism after the sixteenth century storms. To accomplish that he did hesitate to take arguments from all sides: thus, in his treatment of the free will problem he relied on an argument which resembles the opposition between free will and astrology as found in Pico’s Disputationes contra astrologiam divintricem.
