Influence of zinc and magnesium on the female stomatognatic system

Objective of investigation: The influence of the concentration of zinc and magnesium in the female saliva and of the lack of female sexual hormones on the stomatognaihic system, i.e. on the loss of teeth and wearing removable prosthetics. Method used: The research included 120 female subjects divided into two groups: women in the period of fertility and women in the menopausal and postmenopausal period. Each of these groups was further divided into two subgroups: subjects having their own teeth and subjects wearing removable prosthetics. The subjects were asked to provide 1 mJL of unstimulated saliva sample, which was collected into plastic test tubes and frozen at -18 °C. The concentration of zink and magnesium in the saliva was determined with ihe Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (A Analyst 800, Perkin-Elmer Corporation, Norwalk, CT, USA) and compared to the basic concentration standard by the same manufacturer- 1 g/L. Results: The student T Test was used in the statistical data analysis. A statistically significant difference was obtained only in the analysis of the concentration of zinc in the participants in the period of fertility having their own teeth as compared to those wearing removable prosthetics (t = -3.20631, p = 0.003265). No statistically significant difference was obtained in other test groups. Conslusion: A reduced conceniration of zinc in women in the period of fertility leads to a decrease in the immune functioning of the organism, and indirectly to a loss of teeth and wearing removable prosthetics.
