Near Electric Field Around the Shipboard Navigational Radar Patch Array Antenna: Comparison to Human Exposure Limits
We investigated the levels of electromagnetic fields (EM) emitted from a typical X-band navigational radar on a small leisure boat. In this study, we created a computer model of the radar patch array antenna in FEKO simulation software and observed the electric field in the near field zone of the radar. The calculation was focused on the area in front of the radar antenna, normally occupied by the crew on many small leisure boats, especially those with a flybridge. Our results were then compared to national and international EMF exposure limits, showing that some of the limits were exceeded. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study analyzing the human exposure to radars on small boats based on a realistic model of the radar patch array antenna.
