Human Heart Numerical Simulations for Advanced Healthcare
It is well known that many different industries apply numerical modeling and simulations to design products and develop processes. Today, such engineering approach applies medical imaging, to understand the behavior of malfunctioning organs, in order to replace them with new implants (artificial organs). Such approach considers the patient specific medical imaging, providing input to Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, which are coupled with multi-physics Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) models, becoming one of the well adopted approaches for generating the appropriate engineering frameworks for design and development of specific cardiac devices. This presentation gives an overview of some recent application of the FSI modeling and simulations in cardiac engineering. The presentation gives an introduction on simulation concepts/approaches applied in cardiac field for diagnosis, device and pre-operation assessment. While it intends to encourage the community to consider these concepts in cardiac research, it highlights the importance of realistic modeling and accurate numerical simulations, to advance the healthcare with high-quality software.
