Improving initial conditions in a convection-permitting LAM

One of the main challenges presented by a Limited Area Model (LAM) concerns the limited capacity for its initial conditions to correctly represent large-scale flow. In the present work, a Jk blending method is tested for improving representation of large-scale information. Our approach involves employing Jk blending within a framework of 3D-Var data assimilation. This method is implemented in AROME model and is compared to the standard 3D-Var approach. The comparison shows that the Jk method gives a more skillful model, especially for upper-air variables, surface pressure and precipitation.
