EU Citizenship and Fundamental Rights within the Framework of the Stabilization and Association
The concept of EU citizenship should be viewed through both an historical background and theoretical perspectives on citizenship, nationality, identity and differentity. European citizenship has not created a direct legal bond between the individual citizens and the Union. The Amsterdam Treaty has not added anything of substance to Union citizenship Citizenship of the Union to a large extent calls into question the issue of sovereignty of the Member States. The conflicts are caused primarily by the differences of the laws on citizenship of the Member States. One way of overcoming these differences, and thereby strengthening citizenship of the Union, would be to harmonize the laws on citizenship in the Member States.&#8216 ; European citizenship&#8217 ; is one of the most challenging features of the EU polity formation.
