Magnetoelectric multiferroic guanidinium copper(II) formate
In this work we have studied magnetic and magnetoelectric properties of guanidinium copper(II) formate, [C(NH 2 ) 3 ][Cu(HCOO) 3 ], previously known but unexplored material. Measurements were performed using MPMS5 SQUID magnetometer. Temperature dependence of magnetization showed a broad peak centered at 45 K and a sharp rise of magnetization below 5 K. Such behaviour of magnetization could be explained with peculiar structure of this compound, where the framework consists of Cu-formate chains. The broad peak at 45 K can be ascribed to antiferromagnetic order within the Cu- formate chains and the sharp rise of magnetization below 5 K to the formation of complex 3D spin long range order. In some directions hysteresis loops at the temperatures below 5 K showed a sharp increase of magnetization for the fields lower than 50 Oe. The existence of anisotropy could be seen in both M(H) and M(T) measurements. The effect of electric field on the magnetization was observed at temperatures below 5 K as a difference in magnetization curves measured with and without the applied electric field, pointing to the existence of substantial magnetoelectric coupling. Besides ferromagnetic order, some signs of ferroelectric order were also observed, confirming the [C(NH 2 ) 3 ][Cu(HCOO) 3 ] as a magnetoelectric multiferroic. Search for the explanations of observed magnetic behaviour is in progress considering the interesting crystal structure of this compound.
