Effect of structure stiffness on seismic base isolation efficiency using natural stone pebbles

This paper presents the results of a shake-table study regarding the effect of structure stiffness on seismic base isolation efficiency using natural stone pebbles layer. Case studies were conducted with four different structure stiffness (M1, M2, M3, and M4) with the foundation of model on the rigid base and on two different layers of pebbles (layer thickness hp= 0.3 m and hp= 0.6 m). The buildings were modelled with a cantilever column with a mass on top - SDOF, with fundamental period of free oscillation of the column T1, M1 = 0.05 s, T1, M2 = 0.30 s, T1, M3 = 0.60 s, and T1, M4 = 1.40 s, which corresponds to a very stiff, stiff, medium stiff and soft building. Four different horizontal accelerograms were applied, and strains/stresses of the tested models remained in the elastic area. Some specimens were exposed to a set of repeated horizontal base accelerations until structure collapse. For each test, the characteristic displacements, accelerations, and strains were measured. Only some most important study results are shown. It was concluded that the efficiency of seismic base isolation using a layer of natural stone pebbles significantly depends on the building stiffness.
