Prosthetic dentistry on the internet

Internet has a great impact on the way of thinking, buying, teaching, learning and everyday life including medicine and dentistry. Beginnings of internet were in science and research, and have proven to be irreplaceable way of communication between researchers all over the word, but currently (August 2002) one of the most popular search engines on the net (Google) indexes about 2 billion web pages, 35 million of non HTML documents and 700 million Usenet messages, which makes the Internet a greatest information service ever. The purpose of this study was to investigate which part of the web space prosthetic dentistry takes and importance which gains on the Internet. Method used was standard Internet search engine keyword queries preformed using five web search engines: Google, Lycos, AltaVista, Northern Light, HotBot and two metasearch engines Mamma and WebCrawler. Research results show that there is currently (August 2002) about 74 web pages per million which contain terms: prosthetic dentistry or prosthodontics. Indicators of content suggest that quality and real informative value of majority of those pages is low. Informative space on the Internet concerning prosthetic dentistry is still in development and need for confirmed and authorized information on this media is obvious.
