New Duplex Diffusion Coating Process

Principles of carbide layers formation in a diffusion coating process that are based on the physical and chemical phenomena are considered in the contribution. Based on the experimental work, factors affecting the rate of growth of vanadium carbide layer have been quantified. Newly developed duplex process, consisting of two steps (carburizing and diffusion coating of carbide layer) has been described. It produces better mechanical and tribological properties than if just carbide layer is applied, as is the case in the current processes.
