Monitoring urban noise
Today, noise is one of the burning issues affecting the overall quality of everyday life. In order to address the aforementioned issue this book chapter offers an overview of several methods designed to monitor noise pollution in urban areas. In the process of creating cities’ noise maps the traditional measuring methods typically use expensive and static equipment. Low spatial-temporal density of these measurements makes them not particularly suitable for the dynamic urban environments. On the other hand, the increasing popularity of smartphones and advancement of their technological capabilities, has opened a new perspective for a wide range of applications envisaged for the environmental monitoring. Thus, using the Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) method, which is a more contemporary approach, one can create cities’ noise maps in a more easy and intuitive way.
