Excited State Dynamics of β-Carotene Revealed Utilizing Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy

Results of femtosecond pump-probe study of excited-state dynamics of all-trans-β-carotene are presented with focus on experimental details and advanced data analysis schemes such as soft-modeling multivariate curve resolution alternating least-squares analysis (MCR-ALS) and the generalized two-dimensional (2D) correlation spectroscopy data analysis. Conclusion drawn from the analysis indicate that the observed S* state is not the hot S1v’ state but instead a separate singlet state, a different conformational state of a S1 state that could be formed by twisting of the carotenoid backbone.
