Comparison of dynamic and quasi-static towline model for evaluation of wave-induced towed ship motions
Evaluation of wave-induced motions of a towed ship is necessary step in defining hull loads. This is especially important for a damaged ship when structural assessment with safety consideration needs to be performed for towing condition. Preferred way to evaluate the towed ship motions is solving coupled model that incorporates hydrodynamics of the towed ship as well as towline forces. In this study, two approaches for estimation of the towline response are compared. First approach takes into account geometric, axial and flexural stiffness of the towing line along with inertial and damping forces. Second approach only considers restoring forces due to axial and geometric stiffness. Therefore, dynamics and quasi-static model for evaluation of the towline response are compared. Obtained numerical results from both models are also compared with experimental data from available literature where model of the towed ship is observed on regular head waves.
