Experimental contact caustics in isotropic materials
The important problem in experimental mechanics is the determination of concentrated force, such as the force that occurs in contact of elastic bodies made of mechanically isotropic materials. The applied force as well as its inclination (e.g. normal and tangential component of the force) can be identified and measured by the optical method of caustics. The theoretical solution of the optical effects leads to the singular caustic curve surrounding a dark spot. The shape of the curve depends basically upon the angle of the applied force, while its size is in direct connection to force intensity.
