The first results of Silver Fir provenance test in Croatia
The Silver Fir is the most significant coniferous species in Croatian forests. In volume it participates with 9, 4 % while all the other coniferous species participate with 5, 2 In 2000 the Jastrebarsko Forest Research Institute set up provenance trials in the Fužine Forest Office and the Institute&#8217 ; ; s nursery in order to further research the variability of the Fir tree. The Fužine trial was established on a natural Fir tree habitat (Gorski kotar 850 m altitude), while the Jastrebarsko trial was established on a natural Pedunculate oak habitat (100-150 m altitude). The plants were planted in 4 blocks each containing 2000 plants. The statistical analysis of the collected data was conducted using the SAS-System for Windows VER. 6.12. program package. The analysis of the variance resulted in significant differences between provenances regarding the terminal shoot. During the first three weeks the provenances showed an intensive growth that ended in the beginning of June. The researched provenances showed a variability in the distribution frequency for the quantity of side buds on the terminal shoot. The P-4 (Krapina) provenance is extremely late flushing. The terminal bud flushes 7 to 14 days after the entire plant.
