An evaluation of eutrophication effects on northern Adriatic meio- and nematofauna communities
The northern Adriatic is one of the most productive areas in the Mediterranean. It is characterized by a wide range of features related to sensitive marine ecosystems. During the 1980's, nutrient inputs into this region significantly increased. The Po river was identified as the main source of nutrients supply. In order to estimate the effects of an increasing eutrophication, the meio- and nematofauna community structure was examined in the western part of the northern Adriatic (stations 101, 103, and 108), which was supposed to be the most affected by eutrophication process. Comparison were made with the eastern oligotrophic area (stations 005, 007, and 107), and with data established at referent stations in November 1986.
