Spectrophotometric determination of titanium(iv) by extraction of its thiocyanate complex with surfactants
A new spectrophotometric method for separation and determination of titanium(IV) is decribed. It is based on the extraction of titanium(IV) as an ion- associated complex, formed between the titanium(IV) thiocyanate anion and the cetyltrimethylammonium- (CTMA), cetylpyridinium- (CPC), or zephiramine- (ZEFA) cation in chloroform. Optimal conditions for extraction and spectrophotometric determination of titanium(IV) by all extractants were determined. The effective molar absorptivities were (6 - 7) x 104 L mol-1 cm-1 at 420 nm, depending upon reagent used. The determination of titanium by the proposed extraction-spectrophotometric procedure is feasible in the presence of many foreign ions. The ratios of titanium(IV) and CPC or CTMA or ZEFA were determined by the Job¢ ; ; s method The results indicate the existence of 1:2 complexes. For testing the validity of the proposed method for determination of titanium in aluminium alloy, the Peschineé standard was analyzed. The values determined were in a good agreement with the certified values.
