Elasto-plastic analysis of the torsion by FFCM

This paper presents a procedure of numerical modeling of the torsion problem of prismatic bars by applying the Fup Fragment Collocation Method (FFCM). This method is essentially different from the finite element method and represents a new approach in the modeling of engineering problems. In FFCM, instead of discretisation into finite elements, the whole considered area is analysed at once, as one fragment. An approximate solution of arbitrary accuracy is attained by increasing the number of basis functions on the fragment. The main characteristics of this method are: a) geometry of the domain is described in the most adequate way independently of the approximate solution base ; b) the entire domain is considered at once as one or several fragments ; c) an arbitrarily accurate numerical solution is obtained by arbitrary increase in the number of basis functions on the fragment ; d) simultaniously, the values of the solution function and all the fields derived from them, which are generally more interesting than the solution function itself, are calculated in the same points ; e) all fields derived from the solution function are expressed by continuos functions on the domain ; f) it is possible to increase an accuracy of approximate solution by hierarchic increase of basis function number on the fragment or part of the fragment without intrusion into the rest of the domain. The numerical model for the elasto-plastic analysis of prismatic bars subjected to torsion is developed. The propagation of plastic zones in the cross-section is monitored by applying the incremental-iterative procedure until failure.
