Floating booms as means for the prevention of the expansion of oli slick
The problems with oil pollution are not caused by oil releases through the year, but mostly by releases of large quantities of oil in relatively short period of time. The discharges are caused by numerous factors, but the most dangerous are tanker accidents, which cause ecological catastrophes. When oil is spilled in to sea, measurement must be taken to minimise pollution of marine resources and the environment. Once oil is spilled, it starts to spread out over the sea surface. The speed of oil spreading is also determined by the prevailing conditions such as temperature, water currents, tidal streams and wind speeds. Generally, it is preferable to treat oil before it spreads over a wide area. New technological solutions for the cleaning-up oil slick on the surface have been developed. Large booms make possible to recover oil in the open sea as well as in coastal waters, given good weather conditions. The paper deals with technological solutions for the prevention of the expansion of oil slicks by protective floating booms.
