The role of cellular immunity in primary campylobacteriosis
After establishing an experimental model of primary campylobacteriosis in C57Bl/6 mice, we were able to follow up the infection in the livers and spleens of these animals. Primary infection resulted in hepatosplenomegaly, as well as, in evident pathohistological changes of these tissues. Animals with depleted CD4+, CD8+ or NK cells were regularly capable of completely eliminating C. jejuni from analysed organs during the primary infection. Duration of primary infection in livers of CD4+, CD8+ depleted mice was prolonged and the number of CFU was increased. In NK depleted animals the munber of CFU in the liver was even more increased. Primary infection in the spleen was very much prolonged in CD8+ and NK depletion mice. The results show that cellular immunity indeed plays an important role in the defence against this bacteria and must be taken into account.
