Competitiveness of Croatian agriculture on the European Union market

Starting from the classical theories of protectionism (Hamilton, List, Carey, Patten) and up to the present day, there have been zealous advocates and opponents of protective measures in the economy. Generally speaking, the world aims at a complete liberalization of commerce, but in reality there is practically no country which, at a certain stage of its development, did not employ some form of protective measures. In the past, this was especially true of the &#8220 ; ; new countries&#8221 ; ; &#8211 ; ; the U.S.A. and Australia &#8211 ; ; and Germany in the beginnings of its economic upswing. The role of protectionism, however, is still significant, both in developed and in underdeveloped countries and those in transition, and especially in economic integration (European Union). The topical question is how and how much the protective measures can help the development of the economy, especially the agriculture, in Croatia, and what is the extent to which they should be applied. A country&#8217 ; ; s system of trading with other countries depends directly on the degree of the development of its national economy and is, almost always, a combination of the principles of free trade with the protective measures and the instruments of state interventionism. WTO agreement, although in principle promoting the liberalization also of the agricultural sector, provides the underdeveloped countries and the countries in transition with larger possibilities of protection against imports. By analysing the results of the EU system&#8217 ; ; s agricultural protectionism and the protective measures currently applied in Croatia, the study will try to give an answer to whether provisions are made for optimum protection of individual agricultural sectors and whether such protection can influence on competitiveness of Croatian agricultural products on EU market.
