By lowering the filler particle size to nano-dimensions, the special effects in polymer nanocomposites appeared. The earlier morphological results showed that nanoparticles of filler should be dispersed in the matrix in the form of 'net-like' structure. The fillers fairly good distribution in the matrix is of the key importance for the properties. Our interest in this paper was to investigate the way of nanocomposite preparation by polymerisation in situ in comparison to the standard mixing procedure and its influence on the calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanofiller distribution in poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and/or polyurethane (PU) matrices. The improved mechanical and other properties are found in composites with a strong interfacial bond between the matrix and the filler. The reason of the appearance of new and/or improved properties is the formation of a three-dimensional interphase with a significant amount of matrix with restricted chain mobility.
