Application of NMR technique in sediment and soil characterization [Review]

Different NMR techniques are used in soil and sediment characterization as complementary to other analytical methods. The advantage in use of solid state NMR spectroscopy is that it does not depend on the solubility of sediment and soil samples (Schmidt et al., 1997). Solution NMR techniques can be used as well. The aim of the present review of selected recent papers is to initiate application of different NMR techniques in sediment and soil analysis in Croatia. Namely in the field of water policy, according to Decision No.2455/2001/EC of the European parliament and of the Council, numerous organic and inorganic substances have to be measured, both in water and in sediments. The most frequently used techniques are: 13C NMR, 15N NMR, 1H NMR, 31P NMR, 27Al NMR and 29Si NMR. Selected problems, which have been studied in recent literature, will be described. Some suggestions for possible collaborative study on sediment analysis will be presented. Particularly with the aim to understand the reasons for either observed, or poor methylation of mercury in different environments (Bilinski et al., 2001 ; Kwokal et al., 2002).
