Application of biodegradable chain-saw lubricants

The application of biodegradable chainsaw lubricants was investigated by different types of felling (final felling, thinning and selective felling) and tree species (oak, beech, fir, spruce, hornbeam). At all workplaces two types of chainsaw (STIHL 044) were used, one lubricated by biodegradable oil and the other by mineral oil. Cut-to-length method was applied in felling and processing of trees. Records were made on a daily basis of the consumption of fuel and lubricants as well as of the processed assortments volume for each chainsaw. On a certain number of trees, in each type of felling, all cutting areas made by chainsaw were measured so as to determine the ratio of the cutting area per tree and per assortment. The largest cutting area per tree was measured in felling and processing common oak in final felling and the largest cutting area per assortment was measured with beech trees. The consumption of chainsaw lubricants was measured per unit of processed assortments volume and per cutting area. Maximum consumption of chainsaw lubricants per cutting area was established in final felling of common oak and minimum in selective felling. No significant differences have been recorded between the consumption of biodegradable oil and mineral oil within a specific workplace.
