Translations, Adaptations, Citations, and Paraphrases in 16th- Century Classical Architecture throughout the Eastern Adriatic
Through comparison of the essential examples of reception of the classical architectural vocabulary in Venetian Dalmatia and the Republic of Dubrovnik during Cinquecento, the paper will underline some novel potential approaches and aspects. Particular attention will be given to adherence and irregularities of their structures, proportions, and decorative elements in relation to corresponding models and sources in the works by M. Sanmichelli and S. Serlio but also those that had already been derived within their Italian or Dalmatian environments. Such comparative survey results with a categorization of these processes through the application of corresponding linguistic/literary procedures of a translation that closely follows its original, liberal yet innovative adaptations, liberally transferred citations and, finally, a loosely linked paraphrase which is recognized as the most frequent, yet less transparent phenomenon. Conclusively, such a construct questions the applicability of the most common methodological approaches that have been used and reopens the problem of center/periphery model.
