Diversity of the genus Rosa in the Republic of Croatia
Croatia is characterized by a large natural occurrence of the genus Rosa throughout its territory. The aim of this study was to determine the biodiversity and breeding potential in 11 genotypes of Rosa spp. from different parts of Croatia. The genotype had a significant influence on all studied pomological traits (fruit length and width, medium geometric diameter, sphericity, volume, surface area, shape index, fruit mass, flesh mass, fruit flesh ratio, total dry matter content), while it failed to influence the number of spines per 10 cm shoot. In the majority of the studied traits important for breeding, genotype G2 obtained the highest, while G6 the lowest values. This study highlights the high breeding potential of Rosa spp. in Croatia due to its high variability. This is a one-year study and research should be continued to draw a final conclusion.
