Test-based Design of the Pag Bridge Compression-Tension Bearings
The issues arising from an inadequate design of bridge bearings are discussed with the performance of the Pag Bridge compression-tension bearings. It is a reinforced concrete arch bridge spanning 193.2 m. Aggressive environment combined with inadequate detailing, poor workmanship and damages caused by aircraft missiles led to the rapid degradation of the bridge. After various repair techniques proved inefficient, the entire bridge superstructure was replaced. To support the new superstructure, pot bearings were installed. These included compression-tension pot bearings at the superstructure abutments and at the supports next to the crown of the arch. Inspection and testing of these bearings were conducted and the analysis revealed disturbing level of stresses and DAF induced in the elements of these bearings. Therefore, a proposal of the new compression-tension bearings for the Pag Bridge was delivered with respect to the test-determined structural properties.
