Airborne microorganisms in farrowing and nursery
Aerosol partides found in the air of animal housing consist mainly of dust and microorganisms. Dust particles can contain a large number of microorganisms. Various microbial pathogens transmitted through the air can cause diseases in farm livestock of economic importance. The level of airborne microorganisms in pig housing ranges between hundreds and thousands per liter of air. The aim of the study was to assess the bacterial and fungal flora in pig farrowing and nursery. Airborne and culturable bacteria and fungi were inoculated on nutrient agar, blood agar. MacConkey agar. Sabouraud-maltose agar, and Chrom agar by use of a SAS 100 surface air sampler (PBI International). Twenty-liter air samples were taken during the spring and autumn. Viable bacterial counts were expressed as number of colony forming units (cfu/m3). Isolated microorganisms were identified by API system (bioMerieux). In farrowing, mean values were: 0.64x104 (spring) and 8xl04 (autumn) cfu/m3 for total bacteria ; 535 (spring) and 210 (autumn) cfu/m3 for gram negative bacteria ; and 0.46x104 (spring) and 6.4x104 (autumn) cfu/m3 for fungi. In nursery. mean values were: 0.7x104 (spring) and 2.4x104 (autumn) cfu/m3 for total bacteria ; 181 (spring) and 76 (autumn) cfu/m3 for gram negative bacteria: and 0.21x104 (spring) and 3.2x104 {; ; autumn) cfu/m3 for
